I have a difficult time watching any violence portrayed on-screen. I have to close my eyes. I can read a book better. It gives a clearer picture of what else happens in the story.
Bart shared that the violence his father was consumed with in his adult life didn’t come from drugs or alcohol but rather as a result from a head trauma after being struck by a truck and thrown. He was in a coma for about two months and returned home a different man.
The violence caused a divorce and Bart and his brother ended up being raised by their father. Bart became the target in the abuse. He was too afraid to tell anyone and had to suppress all his experiences.
Bart had exposure to church during his life. He had two Christian grand-mothers who may not have known what was going on behind closed doors. He had two childhood friends, a boy and a girl who became his wife when they were grown.
Once Bart’s father was diagnosed with cancer, he began to turn his life around. There were still moments when he reverted to old behavior but it began to improve. Upon his death, Bart’s father left his pension for his two son’s in the amount of $600.00 dollars a month for ten years. The day he received the last payment was the day his song became a number one hit.
Although his dream came true, along with it came life realities and a time to deal with the past so he could heal. His wife’s 19 year-old brother committed suicide. Her father died. Their two-year-old son developed diabetes and next bay was born prematurely.
At 370 pounds, his doctor advised him to have weight-loss surgery which required counseling. In counseling, Bart began to tackle issues needed to begin a healthier life both physically and emotionally.
I’ve always wished to be a recording artist but God never allowed that as a plan for me. I don’t want to have awful experiences to have songs to write. We have to remind ourselves not assume those in the spotlight have it easy. They are human too, and we never know what someone else is going through.
At least we do have the hope of Heaven and the imagination of what it might be like there. It will be better than we can ever hope for. I’m looking forward to that day.
